Moru Curry|Puliserry |Kerala style Coconut Gravy

Moru curry is a kerala style recipe made by grounding coconut gratings with red chilies and green chilies and adding the mixture into buttermilk. It is a very famous recipe in Kerala and is served with rice at lunch.

Usually, this recipe has ingredients like onions, garlic, turmeric powder. Some may add vegetables like cucumber or ash gourd. The recipe I am going to teach you will be a plain gravy with no onions.

Let me show you how to make this recipe.

To make this recipe, you would need a mixer to grind the coconuts and chilies.

Moru Curry - Preparation Steps

1. Grate ½ coconuts and keep it aside. In a mixer, add the grated coconuts, 6-7 green chilies, 3 red chilies and ground it into fine paste.

2. Take a bowl of yogurt. You can use 250 ml packet of readymade yogurt.

3. Using a whisk or yogurt churner, churn the yogurt well. Or else, you can pour the yogurt in a mixer to churn the yogurt.

4. To this churned curd, add the grounded coconut and chili mix. Add some salt into the mix.

5. Take the bowl and keep it in medium flame for 2-3 minutes. The moment the mix starts getting heated, a frothy layer appears on top. At that time switch off the flame. Add 3-4 curry leaves to the mix.

6. In a kadai, heat some oil. As the oil gets heated, add ½  tbsp. mustard seeds, 1 red chilli ( broken into 2 halves), 3-4 fenugreek seeds and 3-4 curry leaves.

7. As the tempering mix gets almost golden brown, add it onto the bowl.

8. Mix the ingredients well. Garnish it with curry leaves. Your recipe is ready to be served.

Fenugreek seeds is a must to have ingredient if you want to make this recipe.

Make sure that, the fenugreek seeds don’t get burned or turn black. This is because, it will give a bitter taste to your recipe.

Do not add too much fenugreek seeds into the mix as well. 3-4 is  apt for this dish. Anything more, can make your recipe bitter.

If you like puliserry with onions, you can also fry shallots or small onions along with ¼ tbsp. of turmeric powder and add on top of this recipe.
