Masoor Dal Recipe| Recipe of Dal, Tomatoes and potatoes

Masoor Dal Recipe  – “An easy  recipe of masoor dal along and potatoes”

In life, there is something called law of averages. Whenever you try out something new, like make a new food, or go to a new place, at first you are going to experience the high of doing it. After a few days or weeks your excitement subsides and you would likely return to the normal curve. Hasn't this happened to you?

In the last few days of the week, something similar did happen to me. I had been experimenting new recipes each night. So, monday it would be aloo chana, tuesday it woud be, kadai paneer and so forth. After all, trying something new gives a thrill right?

But come friday, I had enough with the experimentation's. I finally wanted something really simple. Something which I can eat and go to bed peacefully. And the solution I finally resorted to, was a simple masoor dal recipe.

So, what is this masoor dal recipe?

The recipe I have made, is a bit different from the usual dal fry. Here, we will add potatoes. Potatoes make this dish, a little more filling. So, when you don’t really have the time to make an extra side dish along with dal and rice, this recipe will help you.

Instead of preparing the gravy by just using tur dal, I have used a mix of tur and masoor dal. Apart from this, I will be adding a tadka/tempering on top of this dish. Normally for dal fries, this step is not done.

I have also avoided using onions or garlic in this recipe. But, if you are someone who likes onions in your recipes, feel free to use them.

So, shall we get started? Let’s begin.

2. Chop tomatoes into medium sized chunks and add it to the dal mix. Also add ½ tbsp turmeric powder and ½ tbsp of salt. Let the mix get cooked in a vessel for 7-8 cooker whistles.

3. In the meantime, chop potatoes finely into small pieces.

4. In a pan, fry oil. As the oil starts getting heated, add 1 tbsp cumin seeds. As the cumin seeds sizzle add crushed ginger into it. Keep a medium flame.

6. Add 1 tbsp of coriander powder, ½ tbsp of red chilly powder, 1 tbsp of garam masala powder and mix it well. Add ¼ cup of water into the mix and close the lid of the pan.

7. Once the potatoes have become cooked, keep the flame to simmer.

8. Take out the dal from the cooker. Mash it well using a spatula and add into the potato mix. Add water as per consistency required and boil it for about 5-10 min.
